FAQs
For general questions on the subject of studying (choice of degree, admission, transfer, dates/deadlines, financial matters), this homepage provides you with detailed information: https: //www.uni-graz.at/de/studium/.
All relevant information on enrollment can be found in the FAQ under the topics admission and admission requirements.
You must already be admitted to the Master’s program to be able to receive credit for completed courses. If you have any questions (e.g. can course X be recognized for Y?), please send an e-mail to genderstudies(at)uni-graz.at.
If you wish to have a course recognized, please follow these steps:
- Submit an application for recognition in UNIGRAZOnline (you can find instructions here).
- Inform us by e-mail(genderstudies(at)uni-graz.at) when you have submitted an application for recognition in order to initiate further processing.
is not impossible, but it is generally advised to start in the winter semester. Why? The basic modules (modules A and B) are not offered in full in the summer semester. However, for some of the Master's courses (for the in-depth modules C, D, E and F), the prerequisite is that at least 18 ECTS from the basic modules (modules A and B) have been successfully completed. However, students may choose to begin with the Practical Module (Module H) and elective courses in the summer semester. If you choose the Individual Specialization Module (Module G) as one of your three advanced modules, you may also be able to prepone and complete portions of this module, depending on the specific courses being offered (see UNIGRAZonline).
You can find the "Internship application" form in the FAQs on the topic of internships.
Various other forms can be found on the homepage of the Faculty of Catholic Theology, which is also home to the Dean's Office for Inter-Faculty Teaching: https: //theol.uni-graz.at/de/studienservice/formulare-und-anleitungen-a-z/.
Students who have not completed their undergrad degree in Austria are considered international applicants and must apply for admission to a degree program. The topic of the Master's thesis must be taken from the following modules or must be related to these subjects in a meaningful way:
- Module C (Gender Relations in Transformation)
- Module D (Theoretical Currents in Gender Studies)
- Module E (Gender and Representation)

Choicing a Master's thesis supervisor
You can decide on the supervisor for your Master’s thesis. The supervision will also be on the board for your Master’s examination (see the information on the Master's examination). Here we provide a list of possible supervisors and their thematic focuses. If you would prefer to have a different person as your Master's thesis supervisor, please contact the Coordination Center (e-mail genderstudies(at)uni-graz.at) in advance to reach an agreement with the Curriculum Committee and the Dean of Studies.
Please note that you must complete a research seminar for your Master's thesis. Please discuss with your supervisor, which course might be suitable for this. After completing the course, it must be recognized in UNIGRAZonline (see Recognition of courses). Please inform us via e-mail(genderstudies(at)uni-graz.at) after you have submitted the application for recognition in UNIGRAZonline.
Further information as well as forms for graduation (such as the form for announcing/assigning the Master's thesis topic, registration for the board examination, deadlines, etc.) can be found on the homepage of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Catholic Theology/Deanery for Inter-Faculty Teaching at this link: https: //theol.uni-graz.at/de/studienservice/studienabschluss/. The contact person for Gender Studies students in the Dean's Office is Gertraud Blass, Tel. +43 (0)316 380 - 6003 (Universitätsplatz 3).
Here you will find a sample title page for your Master's thesis.
The Master's examination is an oral, board examination. The examination board consists of three persons: The supervisor of your Master's thesis and two other persons who must have an employment relationship with the University of Graz and, as a rule, a teaching authorization (habilitation) (e.g.: associate professor / university professor / private lecturer). You can/must choose these persons yourself. The examination takes place at the Dean's Office for Interdepartmental Teaching and lasts approx. 40 minutes. First you present your Master's thesis (approx. 15 minutes) and then you discuss your Master's thesis.
You set the date for the examination with the persons on your examination board and then please announce it to Gertraud Blass (Dean's Office for Interdepartmental Teaching). Here you can find further information about completing the degree.
As part of the degree program, students must complete at least 100 hours of practical work (4 ECTS credits). An accompanying course entitled "Praxis-Reflexion" (1 ECTS credit) is offered to reflect on the practical experience. Participation in this course is compulsory. A report must be written about the internship; requirements regarding the structure and content of the report will be announced in the accompanying course.
Please note the following steps:
1. Selection of the internship
The Coordination Center for Gender Studies provides an overview of possible internship positions (list of internship positions), but does not act as an intermediary. Students have the opportunity to make contact with these institutions or facilities, but can also find internships themselves. There are no regional restrictions (for internships outside Austria, it is possible to apply for financial support. Information on this can be found here: https: //international.uni-graz.at/de/auslandsaufenthalte/). Students negotiate the conditions with the respective institution themselves; such internships are usually handled as volunteer placements. The main criterion for the selection of an internship position is that the work in the institution/facility fits in thematically with the degree, as the internship serves to test and practically apply the knowledge acquired during the studies. It further offers the opportunity to make contact with potential employers. Important: If you are planning an internship at an institution not on the list, please contact us early on so that we can clarify whether this is possible. Please send a short letter of motivation to sarah.zapusek(at)uni-graz.at and explain why you would like to work at this particular institution, whether there are people there who have expertise in the field of gender research and in which area you will be working in. Above all, it is important that you deal with gender content and gender equality aspects and that you can integrate the knowledge acquired through your studies.
2. Internship application
Before completing the internship, you must apply to the Curriculum Committee and the Dean of Studies via the Coordination Center for Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities. Please send this form to christina.lessiak(at)uni-graz.at or bring it directly to the Coordination Center for Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities. Here you will find a form completion guide (please fill in the fields marked in orange). If the content of the planned internship does not comply with the curricular requirements, the Curriculum Commission will point this out within 2 weeks.
3. Internship confirmation
After completing the internship, please send the internship confirmation to christina.lessiak(at)uni-graz.at or bring it directly to the Coordination Center.
If it is not possible to complete an internship, the student has the option of completing a relevant course worth 5 ECTS credits, in which case the course "Praxis-Reflexion" is omitted. This procedure must be agreed in advance, in writing, with the Curriculum Commission via the Coordination Center for Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities (e-mail to genderstudies(at)uni-graz.at).
