Vor der Prämierung hält Ana Maria Jaramillo einen Vortrag über "The impact of prestige on the visibility of underrepresented groups in citation rankings: the intersection of international mobility, nationality and gender":

Abstract: Over the past decade, AI-powered academic engines have reinforced scientific biases, resulting in the continued underrepresentation of certain groups. We aim to understand how international mobility has influenced the attainment of top-ranking positions in science by researchers who face intersecting forms of oppression (such as women from low-income countries). In our ongoing work, we examine the gender and geographical representation of researchers in top-ranked positions across 19 fields using Semantic Scholar. We determine the gender and nationality of researchers based on their first and last names and compare this information with their country of affiliation. Our findings indicate that women are underrepresented in all fields, although there is almost equal representation in the Social Sciences. Additionally, there is a concentration of researchers from East Asia & Pacific and Europe & Central Asia, with many affiliations in North America. Regarding migration, Italian, German, and Chinese researchers have the highest affiliations with their respective countries, while other countries, particularly the United States, attract researchers from various nationalities. Notably, researchers from East Asia & Pacific countries are underrepresented in the rankings. When examining the intersection of nationality, affiliation, and gender, we observed that women are disproportionately represented in top-ranking positions across all countries except for Turkey. For our upcoming analysis, we aim to investigate the impact of migration to prestigious countries and institutions on representation in top-ranking positions based on nationality and gender.

Ana Maria Jaramillo (she/her) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna for the project on Multi-attribute, Multimodal Bias Mitigation in AI Systems (MAMMOth) and a member of the Computational Social Science and Networked Inequality group led by Fariba Karimi (TU Graz, Austria). She finished her PhD in Computer Science at the Biocomplex Lab, University of Exeter, UK and has strong collaborations with the Social & Health Complexity Center at the Universidad de los Andes, Colombia.
Her research focuses on applying the complex systems paradigm to the science of science, education, and public health.
